Documenta 15 reveals global participants for 2022 Kassel exhibition under ruangrupa's lumbung concept

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Ruangrupa, an Indonesian collective serving as the artistic directors for documenta 15, revealed the first participants for the exhibition scheduled in Kassel, Germany, from 18 June to 25 September 2022. This marks a historic moment as it is the first instance of Asians and a collective curating the event. Their methodology, rooted in the agricultural idea of 'lumbung' (rice barn), focuses on sustainable management of resources and collaborative practices. Nine international collectives, such as Fondation Festival sur le Niger (Mali), Gudskul (Indonesia), and INLAND (Spain), will work together to strengthen local practices and ecosystems. Established in 2000, ruangrupa has been involved in significant exhibitions, including the Gwangju Biennale and curated the 2016 Sonsbeek in Arnhem.
