Documenta 15 may be postponed to 2023 due to pandemic

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

Documenta 15, the quinquennial contemporary art exhibition in Kassel, Germany, may be postponed from 2022 to 2023 due to ongoing travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. General director Sabine Schormann stated that if travel bans continue through 2021, organizing the 2022 edition would be impossible, as many preparations require artists to be physically present in Kassel for extended residencies. The curatorial collective ruangrupa from Indonesia plans a community-oriented, cooperative platform addressing colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy. A final decision will be made in summer 2021. Other art events like Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze Los Angeles, and miart have already postponed their 2021 editions.
