Documenta 14's Athens Edition Rejects Market Conformity with Political Art Focus

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The first segment of Documenta 14, directed by Adam Szymczyk, takes place in Athens and continues until June 2017, utilizing over 40 locations in both Athens and Kassel. This exhibition intentionally steers clear of renowned artists, instead spotlighting historical works and performances that tackle issues such as neoliberalism, refugee crises, and right-wing populism. Among the highlighted pieces are Miriam Cahn's paintings addressing refugee matters, Hiwa K's sculpture 'One Room Apartment' reflecting on Iraqi housing, and Postcommodity's sound installation. Historical contributions consist of Hasan Nallbani's 1966 painting and Synnøve Persen's 'Sámi Flag Project.' The exhibition critiques neocolonialism and climate change, aiming to reshape art history by incorporating marginalized perspectives. Its subtitle, 'Learning from Athens,' signifies wider European challenges. The second segment will debut in Kassel in June 2017.
