Documenta 14 in Kassel rethinks exhibition structure through nodes, archival gestures, and political art

Documenta 14, staged in Kassel in 2017, abandoned a central theme in favor of a decentralized structure organized as a collection of nodes. Curator Adam Szymczyk led the exhibition, which featured significant collaborations including the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) displaying part of its collection at the Fridericianum. This exchange stemmed from the exhibition's initial chapter in Athens under the concept 'Learning from Athens'. Key venues included the Neue Galerie, transformed into a meditation on privilege; the Documenta-Halle, focusing on scripts; the Neue Neue Galerie in an abandoned post office, examining labor; and the Museum für Sepulkralkultur, dedicated to death memorabilia. The show incorporated political and activist works, such as feminist posters by Lala Rukh, revolutionary proposals by Sanja Iveković, and Annie Sprinkle's ecosex walking tour. A notable archival presentation featured materials from the late Christopher D'Arcangelo, including his performance at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Sami artist Máret Ánne Sara contributed 'Pile o' Sápmi' (2017), a lightbox work addressing indigenous rights and reindeer herding legislation in Norway. The exhibition's map, with its altered scale and sparse street names, became a conceptual element reflecting the show's engagement with territory and viewer navigation.
