Documenta 14 Expands to Athens in 2017, Breaking Kassel's Exclusive Hosting Tradition Since 1955

exhibition · 2026-04-20

For the first time since its 1955 founding, Documenta will be staged in two cities. The 2017 edition will open in Athens in April before launching in Kassel on June 10, with a month of overlapping programming. Artistic Director Adam Szymczyk announced this dual-venue approach at an October 6 symposium, framing it as a response to contemporary European divisions. He described the decision as an attempt to shift visitor perspectives and highlight themes of displacement and loss. Each location will feature an independently developed exhibition component. This structural change marks a significant departure for the quinquennial event, which has historically been anchored solely in the German town.
