Documenta 14 curators refute financial mismanagement claims, defend two-venue model

The curatorial team of Documenta 14 issued a statement on September 14, 2017, responding to a September 12 HNA report alleging financial troubles. They refuted claims that Artistic Director Adam Szymczyk and CEO Annette Kulenkampff were responsible for potential bankruptcy, criticizing the media for not verifying facts. The curators emphasized that the two-venue concept in Athens and Kassel, proposed by Szymczyk in late 2013, was approved by all stakeholders, including the Supervisory Board of documenta gGmbH and an international selection committee. They noted the budget remained largely unchanged since 2012 despite the expanded scope, with only one adjustment in summer 2016 shared between stakeholders and ticket sales. The exhibition ran for 163 days across both cities, surpassing previous editions by 63 days and one entire city. Over 330,000 visits in Athens and more than 850,000 in Kassel were recorded, though many Athens visits did not translate into ticket sales. The statement denounced exploitative working conditions and growth expectations that threaten Documenta's role as a site for critical art. It also criticized politicians for excluding the artistic team from discussions, such as an August 30, 2017 Supervisory Board meeting, and highlighted the Mayor of Kassel's lack of objection to HNA reporting. The curators called for solidarity to defend Documenta's independence from political and economic pressures.
