dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel Explores Individual Mythologies Through 160 Artists Across 20 Venues

festival-fair · 2026-04-22

From June 9 to September 16, 2012, Kassel, Germany, became a hub for contemporary art through dOCUMENTA (13), showcasing over 160 artists in more than twenty locations. The event, curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, spanned 100 days and was anticipated to draw over a million attendees. It featured well-known venues such as the Fridericianum, along with off-site exhibits in Kabul. Christov-Bakargiev's vision was influenced by Harald Szeemann's concept of "individual mythologies." The diverse artworks included Charlotte Salomon's "Life? or Theater?" and Goshka Macuga's tapestry, alongside ceramics and pieces from unconventional artists like Konrad Zuse and Erkki Kurenniemi. Highlights included Mark Dion's installation at the Ottoneum and Geoffrey Farmer's "Leaves of Grass." A press conference marked the opening on June 6.
