Docu-film 'L'Amatore' Reveals Piero Portaluppi's Cinematic Obsession

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

A recently uncovered 16mm film archive, concealed for more than thirty years, has led to the creation of a documentary focused on Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi. Director Maria Mauti utilized the edited footage to produce 'L'Amatore,' which debuted at the 69th Locarno Film Festival in 2016. The film has since been shown at IFFR Rotterdam and BAFICI Buenos Aires, and it recently premiered in Milan. Produced by Piero Maranghi MP1 and distributed by Nexo, the documentary features narration by Antonio Scurati and the voice of Giulia Lazzarini. It highlights Portaluppi (1888–1967) as a prominent architect and charmer, who acquired a movie camera in 1929 to document structures like Villa Necchi Campiglio (1932–1935), dubbing himself 'the man with 25 careers.'
