Djamel Tatah and Rachid Taha: A Long Friendship

publication · 2026-04-23

The article introduces "Meets," a new column where an artist interviews a musician they admire. For this installment, painter Djamel Tatah chose singer Rachid Taha. Unlike the previous pairing of Marc Desgrandchamps and Bertrand Burgalat, Tatah and Taha have been friends since the early 1980s. Tatah is known for his silent paintings featuring figures in curious choreographies. Taha founded the band Carte de Séjour in Lyon in 1981, famous for their cover of Charles Trenet's "Douce France." Since 1989, he has had a successful solo career blending Oriental music, rock, and electro. The conversation took place at Taha's home ahead of Tatah's exhibition at Galerie Kamel Mennour in Paris, running from May 18 to June 30, 2006.
