publication · 2026-04-27

Published in July 2023 by Quodlibet, the 'Dizionario Fontana' is a comprehensive reference work edited by Luca Pietro Nicoletti in collaboration with the Fondazione Lucio Fontana. The 700-page volume (€34) contains over 300 entries written by more than sixty scholars of different generations. It examines the life and work of Italian-Argentine artist Lucio Fontana (Rosario, 1899 – Comabbio, 1968), known for his spatial concepts, cuts, holes, and environments. The dictionary covers works, techniques, materials, artists, writers, critics, collectors, movements, exhibitions, and conceptual categories. Entries range from 'Acrilico' to 'Zocchi', including figures like Carla Lonzi, Bruno Munari, Medardo Rosso, Carlo Scarpa, and Francesco Somaini, and works such as 'Attese' and 'Venezie'. The structure allows for multiple reading paths. In the preface, Paolo Laurini, former president of the Fondazione Lucio Fontana, notes that the plurality of readings and generations involved ensures an open future for new studies. Silvia Ardemagni, current president, adds that the publication represents an important opening toward a future in continuous becoming.
