Divisionism Exhibition at GAM Milan Presents 30 Works from Two Collections

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) in Milan presents 'Divisionismo. 2 collezioni,' an exhibition of 30 works curated by Giovanna Ginex. The show deliberately counters the trend of large-scale blockbusters by offering a focused view of Divisionism, the artistic movement that animated Milan and its surroundings in the last decade of the 19th century. Works are drawn from the joint collections of GAM and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona. The exhibition is organized into five rooms: the first explores late-Romantic scapigliatura with works by Previati, Tranquillo Cremona, and Luigi Conconi; the second features mountain landscapes by Carlo Fornara, Giovanni Segantini, and Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo; the third focuses on social painting with Angelo Morbelli's 'Mi ricordo quand'ero fanciulla,' Attilio Pusterla, Plinio Nomellini, and Giovanni Sottocornola; the fourth is dedicated to pastel works; and the fifth examines cross-pollination with contemporary and later movements, including Giacomo Balla's melancholic 'La Fidanzata a Villa Borghese' and Umberto Boccioni's portraits on the cusp of Futurism. The exhibition highlights connections between artists such as Balla, Boccioni, Segantini, and Pellizza da Volpedo, placing them in a broader contextualized narrative. It also includes sculpture by Leonardo Bistolfi and Giulio Branca.
