Disused newsstand becomes cultural hub Edicò in Rovigo
In Rovigo, Italy, a former newsstand in Piazza Matteotti has been transformed into Edicò, a mini cultural space founded by art historians Elisa Giuliani and Ilaria Parini. Officially opened on 19 September 2025, Edicò hosts exhibitions, workshops, and events for emerging artists and illustrators. The first exhibition features local photographer Mattia Zoppellaro on 20 October. Until December, artists Luca di Battista and Laura Bortoloni will occupy the space. The project was funded by a private fund and a crowdfunding campaign. An unofficial opening on 6 September featured an external installation mapping closed venues in Rovigo, inviting public participation. Edicò aims to revitalize the declining newsstand network—from 40,000 in the early 2000s to under 12,000 in 2024—by acting as a 'third place' for community engagement. The founders plan to expand by applying for grants beyond Rovigo and continue exploring the theme of third places.
