Disobedience Archive's 'The Agitational Billboard' Opens in Lisbon

The Disobedience Archive, an audiovisual archive of disobedience founded in 2005 by curator Marco Scotini, has opened a new chapter titled 'The Agitational Billboard' at the Amélia de Mello Foundation Gallery of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon, running until September 25, 2026. The exhibition features 18 video works selected from the archive, organized into two thematic sections: 'rebel communities and colonialism' and 'gender disobedience.' The installation is designed by Portuguese-South African artist Ângela Ferreira, inspired by the agitprop kiosks of Latvian constructivist Gustav Klutsis from the early 1920s. Works address Portugal's colonial past, including Ferreira's 'Adventures in Mozambique and the Portuguese Tendency to Forget' (2016), and cover topics such as the Lower East Side underground scene, political repression in Morocco, decolonization wars in Africa, and feminist and queer movements. The exhibition coincided with the XVI Lisbon Summer School for the Study of Culture, organized by the university in collaboration with the Porto Summer School on Art & Cinema. The archive, which has no fixed home, was previously shown at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich (February–May 2026). The project will continue in Porto.
