artist · 2026-05-04

For the Italian premiere of Disney's live-action Aladdin, street artist Matteo Mariani, known as Koi, created a stencil artwork of the flying carpet. The film, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith, opened in Italian cinemas on May 22, 2019, grossing over 700,000 euros on its first day. Koi's piece, measuring 2m x 140cm, used 14 hand-cut stencil layers, acrylic paint, brush, roller, and spray. He completed the work live at the premiere in Milan after days of preparation. The artist studied the symbolism of Arabic carpets and the history of the flying carpet in One Thousand and One Nights. The film's flying carpet was built on a hydraulic platform in front of a blue screen; Naomi Scott described filming as uncomfortable due to foam mats and sharp devices. The article was written by Margherita Bordino for Artribune.
