Diriyah Art Futures: Saudi Arabia's New Digital Art Hub Opens in Riyadh

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Diriyah, a historic city on the outskirts of Riyadh, is undergoing a massive transformation as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 initiative. The Diriyah Art Futures (DAF) museum, designed by Rome-based architect Andrea Schiattarella, opened in late November 2024 as a center for digital arts. DAF is part of the larger 'Diriyah, The City of Earth' development, which includes the newly opened Bab Samhan hotel (a Luxury Collection by Marriott International) and plans for 40 more hotels. The area is managed by Diriyah Gate, which also restored the UNESCO site At-Turaif and built the Bujairi Terrace dining district. DAF director Haytham Nawar emphasizes the institution's role as a school, lab, and exhibition space without a permanent collection, focusing on temporary shows and residencies. The museum aims to foster local talent and international exchange, partnering with France's Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains. This cultural push is part of Saudi Arabia's strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil and open the country to tourism and global cultural dialogue, ahead of major events like the FIFA World Cup 2034.
