Dior and Louvre Partner for Five-Year Jardin des Tuileries Restoration
Dior has signed a five-year agreement with the Musée du Louvre to fund the restoration of the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris, combining its support for women's empowerment with environmental conservation. The restoration begins in April 2020 with the reopening of a 3,000-square-meter northeastern grove featuring 116 trees of four species. The garden, created in 1564 under Catherine de' Medici and redesigned by André Le Nôtre for Louis XIV, attracts 14 million visitors annually. Dior's creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri has previously collaborated with feminist artists Tomaso Binga and Judy Chicago for shows at the Musée Rodin. The latest Dior autumn-winter 2020-2021 show at the Tuileries featured a scenography by Claire Fontaine (Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill), including neon signs with feminist slogans like "Patriarchy = Climate Emergency" and "Women's love is unpaid labour." The runway was covered with pages from Le Monde, inspired by a 1949 Henri Matisse portrait by Robert Capa.
