Dineo Seshee Bopape Wins 2017 Future Generation Art Prize with $100,000 Award

Dineo Seshee Bopape has been named the winner of the 2017 Future Generation Art Prize, receiving a total award of $100,000. The prize, established by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, recognizes artists under 35 years old. Bopape's award includes $60,000 in cash and $40,000 allocated for creating new work. Phoebe Boswell received the Special Prize with a $20,000 award. An international jury selected both artists from a shortlist of 21 participants. The jury included Nicholas Baume of New York's Public Art Fund, Iwona Blazwick from London's Whitechapel Art Gallery, Björn Geldhof of Kyiv's PinchukArtCentre and Baku's Yarat, Mami Kataoka from Tokyo's Mori Art Museum and curator of the 2018 Biennale of Sydney, Koyo Kouoh of Dakar's Raw Material Company, Jochen Volz from São Paulo's Pinacoteca, and Jérôme Sans of Paris's Palais de Tokyo and Perfect Crossovers. Works by all shortlisted artists are currently displayed at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kyiv until April 16, 2017. This marks the fourth edition of the biennial prize.
