Dineo Seshee Bopape's Soil Installation at Pinchuk Art Centre Explores Land and Ritual

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From 24 February to 13 May 2018, Dineo Seshee Bopape, a South African artist, showcased a solo exhibition at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kiev. The installation comprised two galleries filled with soil, featuring a central gully with steps carved from earth. Sculptural soil forms, such as cubes and crosses, were positioned on the steps, while additional mud shapes, candles, and wooden bowls were placed on geometric raised islands. At the far end, a wooden structure with a domed mud roof was present. This exhibition was commissioned after Bopape received the 2017 Future Generation Art Prize. The locally sourced soil from Ukraine highlights ongoing land disputes, evoking themes of Mother Earth, birth, death, and humanity's bond with the earth.
