Dineo Seshee Bopape's Sculptural Practice Explores Land, Sovereignty and Afro-Diasporic Traditions
Dineo Seshee Bopape, an artist based in Johannesburg and originally from Polokwane, South Africa, creates intricate sculptures from materials such as compressed soil and clay, delving into issues of landlessness and colonial history. In 2017, she showcased +/-1791 (monument to the haitian revolution 1791) at the Sharjah Biennial, earning both the Future Generation Art Prize and the Sharjah Biennial Art Prize. Her works have been displayed globally, including at the Jakarta Biennale and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. Currently, her solo exhibition, 222, Phurulloga, is on view at Bielefelder Kunstverein until 28 January 2018, with additional shows at Collective Gallery in Edinburgh until 10 February and Sfeir-Semler in Hamburg until 19 January. In 2018, she will be featured in multiple venues and was recognized as a Future Great by Osei Bonsu.
