Dimitris Papaioannou creates first guest choreography for Pina Bausch's company

Greek choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou has created 'Since She', the first work by a guest choreographer for Tanztheater Wuppertal since Pina Bausch's death in 2009. The piece premiered in Paris at Théâtre de la Villette in July 2019 and will have its Italian premiere at Armonie d'Arte Festival in Catanzaro from September 13 to 15, 2019. Papaioannou, who studied visual arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts and was an assistant to Robert Wilson, blends Bausch's codes with his own. The work explores a feminine archetype, moving from psychological to mythological. It features black scenery, gold light, and natural elements like shrubs and earth mountains. The opening choreography uses dark chairs reminiscent of 'Café Müller', evolving into collaborative circus-like balancing. The soundscape mixes Tanztheater music, Greek traditional music, and concrete sounds typical of Papaioannou's work. The piece is a dedication to Bausch, created from the dancers' bodily memory, but stands as an original creation.
