Dilara Findikoglu Designs Matriarchal Uniforms for Imaginary Turkish Space Station at OMM
London-based fashion designer Dilara Findikoglu has created a collection of uniforms for an imaginary Turkish Space Station, commissioned by the Odunpazarı Modern Museum (OMM) in Eskişehir, Turkey. The project, titled 'Space Uniform projects' (2019), draws inspiration from Anatolian matriarchal culture, featuring female figures such as Kybele and Medusa. The uniforms are designed to challenge patriarchal representations, with all crew members depicted as female matriarchs. The collection has been integrated into the museum, and volunteers and interns wear t-shirt and sweatshirt designs inspired by it. The photo shoot for the project took place in a local high school near OMM, with local people modeling the uniforms. Findikoglu, known for her gothic-romantic style and use of red and black, has dressed celebrities like Madonna, Bella Hadid, and Rihanna. The collaboration aligns with OMM's mission to support young artists and designers. OMM, designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, opened in September 2019 and houses a permanent collection of sculpture, installation, new media, and paintings. Findikoglu, born in Istanbul and educated at Central Saint Martins, previously made headlines for organizing an alternative fashion show after her designs were excluded from the graduation show.
