Digitalized Manuscript of Campanella's 'The City of the Sun' Now on Wikisource

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

The Utopia500 year of celebrations in Trento, marking the 500th anniversary of Thomas More's 'Utopia', concludes with the digitalization of a precious manuscript of Tommaso Campanella's 'The City of the Sun'. The manuscript, held by the Biblioteca comunale di Trento, is the oldest witness of the first draft of the text, which describes an utopian society on the island of Taprobana. It is now available under a free license on Wikisource, thanks to a collaboration between the library and Wikimedia Italia. The project was coordinated by user Salvatore Carnevale, with librarians and volunteer Susanna Alessandrini. Wikimedia Italia president Lorenzo Losa praised the alliance between libraries and Wikimedia projects for broadening access to knowledge. The official presentation will take place on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 5:00 PM in the Sala degli Affreschi of the library, with insights into the codex, its history, Wikisource, and Campanella's thought.
