Digital Twin of St. Peter's Basilica on Minecraft for 2025 Jubilee
A digital twin of St. Peter's Basilica has been created for the 2025 Jubilee as part of the project 'La Basilica di San Pietro: AI-Enhanced Experience', a collaboration between the Fabbrica di San Pietro, Microsoft, and Iconem. The twin is based on 400,000 photographs taken by Iconem using cameras, drones, and lasers. Microsoft's AI processed the images to enhance detail and fill gaps, also identifying missing mosaic parts and structural vulnerabilities to aid conservation. The project includes an online platform for virtual visits, including areas normally closed to the public, and two exhibitions, 'Pétros ení' and 'Pétros ení Octagon', created by Lithuanian studio Dadada. In January 2025, a reconstruction of the basilica will be available in Minecraft. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, archpriest of the basilica and president of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, stated that the Church communicates its faith through the languages of the time and cultural context.
