Digital restoration: Accademia Aldo Galli integrates tech into conservation training

The Accademia di Belle Arti Aldo Galli in Como is integrating digital technologies into its restoration curriculum, reflecting a broader shift toward digitization in cultural heritage conservation. Director Nicoletta Castellaneta explains that tools like photogrammetry enable precise scanning and virtual reconstruction of artworks, aiding analysis and reducing environmental impact by minimizing travel. The five-year restoration program, regulated by Italy's Ministry of Culture and Ministry of University and Research, culminates in a state exam for national certification. New offerings include a master in Registrar profession (logistics and insurance for art handling) and a biennial course in Painting and Digital Art starting autumn 2023, with international faculty. The latter connects to the EU-funded Shaping the Future (STF) project, bringing 16 artists from four European countries for workshops on 4D cinema, the metaverse, and AI. Castellaneta advocates for greater recognition of restorers, suggesting their names should be credited on works. She emphasizes that digital skills, including AI, are becoming essential for competitiveness in the field. The academy, part of the IED network since 2010, maintains its AFAM status as a high-level arts institution.
