Digital replica of Piero della Francesca's Montefeltro Altarpiece reinstalled in Urbino

A 1:1 digital replica of Piero della Francesca's Montefeltro Altarpiece (1472) has been installed in the Church of San Bernardino in Urbino, the original location for which it was painted. The work, also known as the Pala di Brera, was looted from Urbino by Napoleonic troops in 1811 and is now housed in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. The initiative marks the 600th anniversary of the birth of Duke Federico da Montefeltro, who is depicted in the painting alongside the Madonna, Child, six saints, four angels, and his son Guidobaldo. The church, which holds the tombs of Federico and Guidobaldo, was restored for the occasion. The digital reproduction was created by Haltadefinizione, a tech company of the Franco Cosimo Panini Editore group, using billions of pixels to capture brushstrokes and details. Luca Ponzio, CEO of Haltadefinizione, stated that technology allows faithful replication of artworks to return them to their place of origin, filling a void for the community. The project is part of a broader program led by the municipalities of Urbino and Gubbio.
