Digital Fiber Art Exhibition Explores 2.5D Experience

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition "2020 USA and China Technology and Innovation in Fiber Art" is a fully digital showcase exploring interactions between technology and textile art. Organized by Beijing Culture & Art Fund in collaboration with the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Art and Design Academy of Tsinghua University in Beijing, it features forty artists—twenty Chinese and twenty American—whose works address contemporary themes through innovative textile techniques. Originally planned for the Tsinghua University Museum, the event became a virtual itinerary with two pavilions. Using multimedia technology designed by the Tsinghua Academy, the 2.5D platform enhances the viewing experience by allowing materials to pop forward or recede based on viewpoint. The exhibition raises questions about experiencing a tactile medium like fiber art digitally, especially in a post-pandemic context. Fiber art emerged in the 1960s-70s when embroidery and sewing were reclaimed by the feminist movement as fine arts. Curator Yue Song reflects on how new technology and materials will transform traditional processes like knitting. The digital format suggests a future where art becomes more accessible and democratic, though it cannot replace physical experience. The exhibition is online at fibertechart.ad.tsinghua.edu.cn.
