Digital Artists Turn Coronavirus into Creative Fuel

digital · 2026-04-27

Digital artists worldwide are transforming the COVID-19 pandemic into a source of creativity. London-based graphic designer and web developer Rifke Sadlier launched Excellent Quarantine Ideas, a website offering quarantine tips and ways to help those in need, fostering empathy and connection. Antoine Bertin created Meditations on Covid-19, a musical piece derived from the RNA sequence of SARS-CoV-2, where each letter (A, U, G, C) corresponds to a musical note; the tempo accelerates with the pandemic's growth and slows as social distancing is expected to reduce spread. Italian artist Alessio Premoli, known as Chelidon Frame, developed Covid-19 Data Sonification, using official Italian data from Covid19api to convert daily confirmed cases, recoveries, and deaths into evolving sound waves that shift with the numbers. The design studio Deeplocal invented Scrubber, a soap dispenser that plays twenty seconds of a user's favorite song while they wash hands, encouraging thorough hygiene through music. These projects blur the line between art, hacking, and design, turning adversity into positive action.
