Digital artist Gianluca Traina on fashion and AI

Gianluca Traina, a digital artist and designer born in Palermo in 1984 and based in Ventimiglia di Sicilia, discusses the intersection of fashion and artificial intelligence. Traina studied fashion design at Polimoda in Florence, IED Barcelona, and with the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana. His creative process for digital fashion parallels traditional garment making: starting with a 3D model, converting to a 2D pattern, then back to a 3D object. He has won the Asia Awards and the American ArtPrize, and was a finalist in the first two seasons of AI Fashion Week. Traina describes the emerging role of Prompt Designer, akin to an art director for AI algorithms. He is collaborating with a Hong Kong clothing company on an AI-based advertising campaign for China throughout 2024, and working on a collection proposal for a large Asian apparel group. In April 2024, he will be a case study and guest speaker at an intensive visual AI course at the University of Helsinki. Traina emphasizes that AI does not replace professionals but opens new creative possibilities.
