Digby Warde-Aldam Reflects on Jacques Couëlle's 'Cave' Architecture at Dragon Hill Residency
In late July and August 2024, writer Digby Warde-Aldam from Paris took part in the Dragon Hill X ArtReview Writers Residency, where he crafted a piece about Jacques Couëlle's 'neolithic-utopian' architectural style. Couëlle, an architect who learned independently, created Dragon Hill in 1964 in Castellaras le Neuf, close to Grasse, as the first of five innovative villas designed to resemble cave habitats. Although there were plans for 50, only five were built. These villas, characterized as 'living beings', turned away from modernist ideals and utilized local materials. Among Couëlle's clients were Peter Ustinov and the Aga Khan. The venture was ultimately abandoned due to insufficient interest, even with current values nearing $2 million. Couëlle pursued similar endeavors until he passed away in 1996, leaving Dragon Hill as an unfulfilled dream.
