Dieter Roth's First Retrospective at Schaulager Basel

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Schaulager in Basel presents the first retrospective of Dieter Roth, featuring the definitive version of 'Gartenskulptur' (Garden Sculpture) by Dieter and Björn Roth. This sculpture originated in 1968 in Cologne, moved to Hamburg in 1975 where it deteriorated, was shipped to Switzerland in 1980, expanded in Paris in 1989 using debris from a nearby construction site, and further modified during exhibitions in Switzerland (1992) and Vienna (1995). The Schaulager, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, houses the Hoffmann Foundation's oversized works and hosts temporary exhibitions. The retrospective includes iconic works such as 'Stretch & Squeeze' from MAC Marseille (1997), the first collaboration between Dieter and Björn Roth at Holderbank (1992), 'Studio-Tisch I, II, III' from the 1980s, 'Flachen Abfall' (1975-76), 'Solo Scenes' (1997-98) shown on 128 monitors, 'Reykjavik Slides' (1973-75/1990-93) projected by 8 projectors, and tapestries made with Ingrid Wiener. The exhibition also features the floor from Roth's Icelandic studio (1975-1993), shipped to Switzerland. The retrospective will travel to Museum Ludwig in Cologne from October 18, 2003.
