The New Horizons | Dieric Bouts Festival in Leuven, Belgium, positions the 15th-century Flemish painter Dieric Bouts as a precursor to modern image-makers like photographers, filmmakers, and advertisers. The festival's centerpiece is a major retrospective at Museum M, featuring thirty of Bouts's works—the largest collection of his pieces ever assembled. The exhibition juxtaposes Bouts's religious paintings with contemporary pop culture imagery, including a photograph of Rihanna holding her newborn, arguing that the Virgin Mary functioned as a medieval pop icon. Bouts, born around 1410 in Haarlem and died in 1475 in Leuven, was a pioneer of scientific perspective in the Northern Netherlands and known for his immersive landscapes. His works are held by the Louvre, Prado, National Gallery, Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and Alte Pinakothek. The show includes the 'Triptych of the Descent from the Cross' (1450-1458), loaned for the first time from the Capilla Real in Granada, and two altarpieces from St. Peter's Church in Leuven. The festival, a collaboration of over 100 cultural partners, aims to foster curiosity and exchange, echoing the city's intellectual legacy since the founding of its university in 1425.
