Diego Marcon's 'Prom' Transforms Lafayette Anticipations into Hybrid Cinema
Diego Marcon's exhibition 'Prom' at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris reimagines the institution as a hybrid cinema, blending late Renaissance Italian theatre architecture with modern movie theatre minimalism. The show features four films—'The Parents’ Room' (2021), 'Dolle' (2023), 'La Gola' (2024), and 'Krapfen' (2025)—created through animation, props, and animated figurines. Each film draws on genres like musical, burlesque, melodrama, and horror to explore emotional production mechanisms, rooted in domestic spaces to question norms and taboos. Ambivalent characters engage in grotesque, often violent scenarios evoking discomfort and empathy, with the artist avoiding moral judgment or resolution. For the first time, Marcon reveals objects used in filmmaking—animatronics, prosthetics, furniture, and sets—displayed behind the scenes to shatter cinematic illusion and challenge perceptions of truth. The title nods to the American high school prom ritual, marking transition to adulthood. Curated by Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, the exhibition runs until July 19, 2026.
