Die Balkone 2: Berlin's Balcony Art Project Returns

The second iteration of Die Balkone, curated by Övül Ö. Durmusoglu and Joanna Warsza since its inception in 2020, occurred in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg from 30 April to 2 May 2021. Numerous local artists showcased their creations on balconies, windows, or the streets below. Notable pieces included Sam Durant's 'Complaints to Ernst, Ongoing,' a megaphone performance directed at a bronze bust of GDR leader Ernst Thälmann, and Nasan Tur's '–Locked up–,' which featured portraits of imprisoned political figures such as Aung San Suu Kyi and Julian Assange, extended due to its popularity. Other artworks revisited local histories, with Pinar Ögrenci honoring anti-Nazi politician Ella Kay on a flag, Andrea Pichl exhibiting GDR-era curtains, and Antonia Low's installation alluding to a former homeless shelter. The project promoted exploration, using maps that offered only vague directions to encourage viewers to wander. Die Balkone 2 took place at various locations throughout Berlin.
