Didi-Huberman's 'Atlas' Exhibition Explores Warburgian Montage at Reina Sofía

exhibition · 2026-04-22

In the winter of 2010, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid hosted the exhibition 'Atlas: How to Carry the World on One’s Back?', curated by Georges Didi-Huberman. This exhibition centers on Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas (1925–29), a collection of images that defies traditional historical narratives. It features original panels from the Warburg Institute in London and contributions from over 20 artists, including Paul Klee, On Kawara, Gerhard Richter, and John Baldessari. The show is organized into four segments: 'Knowledge through images', 'Piecing together the order of things', 'Piecing together the order of places', and 'Times'. Didi-Huberman’s approach combines diverse theoretical perspectives and questions established museum practices. A catalogue edited by him accompanies the exhibition.
