Diango Hernandez's Olaismo Paintings at Galleria Deanesi
Cuban painter Diango Hernandez (born 1970 in Sancti Spíritus) presents eight new works at Galleria Deanesi in Trento, created specifically for the gallery run by Paolo Maria Deanesi. The paintings mark a shift toward a new poetic called 'olaismo,' inspired by the wave as an aesthetic metaphor rather than a political one. This wave motif also appears in his installations, sculptures, and drawings. Having lived in Italy for an extended period, Hernandez assimilated Italian art history; this series pays homage to Giorgio Morandi by evoking his famous bottles, depicted as if floating on water. The bottles reveal the canvas background, creating a sense of floating forms, while referencing Cuba's sea, waves, and dreams. The gallery space is designed to evoke entering Morandi's studio. Colors are vibrant, far from Morandi's muted palette, yet they capture attention. The works combine 20th-century art with contemporary innovation, where form is suspended by the wave. Hernandez calls this suspension the 'artist's promise'—not political or social, but a promise of love.
