Diane Arbus: Constellation at Park Avenue Armory

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Diane Arbus: Constellation, the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of the photographer's work ever staged in New York, opened June 5, 2025, at the Park Avenue Armory and runs through August 17, 2025. Curated by Matthieu Humery, the installation presents all photographs from the set of over 450 prints by Neil Selkirk, Arbus's sole authorized printer, including previously unseen images. Rather than hanging on walls, the prints are supported by an architectural structure that makes them appear to float, allowing visitors to explore them freely. A mirror on the back wall enhances the sense of space. The neo-Gothic Armory itself, with its projection room, cocktail bar, and rooms filled with portraits of military figures, contributes to the experience. The exhibition debuted at LUMA Arles before arriving in Arbus's hometown. Two films in the Board of Officers Room feature Selkirk and Darius Himes, Christie's international head of photographs, discussing Arbus's techniques and innovative approach. Humery stated that the emotional depth of her photographs is amplified within the Drill Hall, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.
