Diana Markosian's 'Santa Barbara' Monograph Explores Family Migration Through Hybrid Photography

publication · 2026-04-22

Diana Markosian's debut monograph, 'Santa Barbara,' explores her family's journey from post-Soviet Russia to the United States during the 1990s through a blend of staged photography, archival images, and film stills. Released on November 17, 2020, this hardcover edition spans 216 pages and features 116 photographs (ISBN 9781597114721). In collaboration with writer Lynda Myles, Markosian crafted a script for a new short film she directed, which delves into her mother's choice to leave Russia, set against the symbolic landscape of Santa Barbara. The project incorporates reenactments, original 1980s soap opera stills, and personal images, all viewed through her mother's lens. Markosian, born in Moscow in 1989, earned her Master of Science from Columbia University and is represented by Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire.
