Dian Suci Wins 2026 Max Mara Art Prize for Women

award · 2026-05-07

The Max Mara Art Prize for Women has announced its tenth recipient: Dian Suci, an artist from Yogyakarta born in 1985. Chosen from a competitive shortlist featuring Betty Adii, Dzikra Afifah, Ipeh Nur, and Mira Rizki, Suci's work delves into the domestic sphere as a canvas for political commentary, reflecting on her experiences as a single mother while tackling themes of patriarchy, capitalism, and authoritarianism. Her award-winning project, Crafting Spirit: Cultural Dialogues in Heritage and Practice, highlights women artisans navigating devotion, labor, and economic challenges, redefining craft as both a survival tactic and a vessel of cultural memory. Suci will engage in a six-month residency in Italy, with research planned in Assisi, Rome, Lecce, and Florence, culminating in a solo exhibition at Museum MACAN in Jakarta and Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia in 2027. The jury, led by Cecilia Alemani, included Venus Lau, Amanda Ariawan, Megan Arlin, Evelyn Halim, and Melati Suryodarmo.
