Dia Art Foundation to Offer Free Admission Across All New York Sites Starting 2020
The Dia Art Foundation, a nonprofit established in New York in the 1970s to support contemporary artists, has announced that all its sites, including Dia:Chelsea and Dia:Beacon, will offer free admission starting September 2020. The policy coincides with the reopening of Dia:Chelsea after renovation and expansion, with a new SoHo space slated for fall 2022. Director Jessica Morgan, formerly of Tate London, succeeded Philippe Vergne in 2015 and prioritized improving existing spaces. The foundation's Chelsea site will feature site-specific works by Renata Lucas for its reopening, a Lucy Raven exhibition in March 2021, and installations by Joseph Beuys for his centenary. Dia is also restoring its Beacon space and revitalizing Walter De Maria's The New York Earth Room and The Broken Kilometer, owned since the 1970s. Free admission is funded by ongoing fundraising and member donations. Morgan stated the goal is to increase access and engagement, establishing an 'open door' to the community after nearly fifty years.
