Detroit's Art Scene Expands with MOCAD Reopening and New Initiatives

exhibition · 2026-04-29

MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit) reopened after an eight-month renovation, now renamed the Julia Reyes Taubman Building. The reopening features four exhibitions, including "Olayami Dabls: Detroit Cosmologies," the artist's first solo museum show in over 40 years. Codirectors Jova Lynne and Marie Madison-Patton, both women of color, lead the institution following a 2020 reckoning over toxic workplace accusations. The museum aims to prioritize accessibility, civic engagement, and education. Concurrently, new arts initiatives like Detroit Salon, founded by Julie Egan, seek to connect local artists to global markets, with its inaugural event planned for 2028. Other developments include Little Village, an arts campus in East Village anchored by The Shepherd gallery, and Lumana, a nonprofit opening in 2025 by philanthropist Jennifer Gilbert. Cranbrook Art Museum will do Lumana's inaugural exhibition. The city's art scene is shifting narratives from industrial decline to creative possibility, with many Cranbrook alumni choosing to stay in Detroit.
