Detroit Institute of Arts Receives Over 2,000 Artworks from Silverman Estate

The estate of collectors Gilbert B. and Lila Silverman has contributed more than 2,000 modern and contemporary pieces to the Detroit Institute of Arts, marking one of the most significant donations in the museum's history. This extensive collection encompasses nearly 500 artists across six curatorial departments, featuring notable works by Vito Acconci, Diane Arbus, Jenny Holzer, and Andy Warhol. Among the highlights are items from the Silvermans' Fluxus collection, which complements the 130 pieces they donated in 2008. Gilbert Silverman was a board member at the DIA, while Lila took on key roles in various museum support organizations. According to DIA director Salvador Salort-Pons, this donation is transformative, with select works set to be unveiled in November when the museum's renovated galleries reopen.
