Detanico and Lain's São Paulo Exhibition Explores Language and Light

Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain present a solo exhibition at Espaço Cultural Porto Seguro in São Paulo, running until April 21. The duo, who have collaborated for over 20 years, are known for their work with typography, writing systems, and codes. The exhibition, conceived around the concept of a garden, features 14 works all connected to light, which the artists describe as indicating the passage of time. Key pieces include "Cachoeira do silêncio" (2018), a wall work based on a waterfall photo from Kyoto, and "Da Luz ao Paraíso" (2018), mapping a route between São Paulo neighborhoods. Other works incorporate literature, such as "Ulysses" (2017), which uses James Joyce's text to form a walking figure, and "Nuvens de São Paulo" (2018), which transforms an Oswald de Andrade text into cloud forms. The exhibition also includes video installations like "28 Luas" (2014) and "Mares da lua" (2018), and concludes with "Ruído branco" (2006), a work on Amazon deforestation originally shown at the Venice Biennale. The artists, now based in Paris, began their definitive dedication to art after receiving a scholarship at the Palais de Tokyo in 2002.
