Design Within Reach Opens The Boat House on Shelter Island

Design Within Reach (DWR) has partnered with Boutique to launch The Boat House, an experiential rental home on Shelter Island, New York. Originally a 1920s waterfront boat house, the property was restored and expanded by owner Scott Murphy into a 2,400-square-foot, five-gabled house with an all-black exterior finished with Swedish pine tar and linseed oil. Inside, DWR furniture includes the Americano Sofa by Hlynur Atlason, Spanish Lounge Chairs from Fredericia, Model 82 Dining Chairs from Møller, and an Otto Dining Table. Notable features include a hanging boat bed suspended over the water with a glass floor panel and submerged light, porthole-like windows, a Gehry Wiggle Stool, and a Wrensilva M1 Record Console. The property also offers a Palissade Dining Set from HAY, Stacked Outdoor Collection from Ellison Studios, an infrared sauna, cedar hot tub, paddle boards, and bikes. Debbie Propst, President of Global Retail at MillerKnoll, and Omar Nobil, Creative Director at DWR, emphasized the alignment of DWR's values with Shelter Island's emphasis on natural materials, light, and indoor-outdoor dialogue.
