Design Science Approach Creates Senior-Friendly Pedestrian Routing
A new pedestrian routing system specifically designed for older adults has been created, shifting focus from traditional shortest-path algorithms to consider barriers, safety thresholds, and supportive infrastructure. Employing echeloned Design Science Research, researchers conducted 11 semi-structured interviews to establish Design Requirements and Principles for routing that is aware of barriers and sensitive to amenities. This system was implemented using an OpenStreetMap pedestrian network, which includes amenities like benches, toilets, and shelters, along with height data. An A*-based routing engine was utilized with adjustable costs and explanation features. A field study involving 14 older adults assessed the senior-friendly routes against conventional shortest-path options, aiming to improve seniors' mobility, participation, well-being, and health.
