Design Museum London announces November 2016 opening at Kensington High Street

institutional · 2026-04-20

The Design Museum in London will relocate from its London Bridge site to Kensington High Street on 24 November 2016. British designer John Pawson is directing an £83 million refurbishment of the Grade II-listed 1960s Commonwealth Institute building, tripling the museum's size. The new venue will feature the institution's first permanent collection display, a library, and an archive. Mark Sladen, former director of the ICA, London (2007–10) and Kunsthalle Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2010–13), will join as head of exhibitions. The current location closes on 30 June with Weekend Punk, a two-day event celebrating punk design's influence. Sir Terence Conran, the museum's original driving force, sold the lease to architect Zaha Hadid, who will use the space for her archive and architecture exhibitions.
