Design Miami debuts in Los Angeles with new creative director Henrik Purienne
Design Miami is launching its first Los Angeles edition, Design Miami/Los Angeles, from May 16 to 20, 2024, with invite-only previews on May 16 and 17. The fair will be held in a private villa in Holmby Hills, a 2,000-square-meter Georgian Colonial Revival-style home from the 1930s designed by architect Paul Williams (1894–1980), the first Black architect to join the American Institute of Architects, who also designed homes for Lucille Ball and Frank Sinatra. The West Coast edition will be curated by Ashlee Harrison, former director of the Americas for Carpenters Workshop Gallery. Photographer Henrik Purienne (born 1977 in Worcester, South Africa) has been appointed global creative director for Design Miami in 2024. The expansion follows the company's acquisition by Basic.Space and the successful inaugural Paris edition in October 2023 during Paris+ par Art Basel. Design Miami was founded in 2005 by entrepreneur and collector Craig Robins and design consultant Ambra Medda. Jen Roberts, CEO of Design Miami, stated that 2024 marks a significant milestone, building on the positive momentum from 2023 and the partnership with Basic.Space. Jesse Lee, founder and CEO of Basic.Space, noted that Los Angeles is not only Basic.Space's home but also a vibrant city with growing interest in design. The 2024 calendar includes Basel (June 10–16), Paris (October 15–20), and Miami Beach (December 3–8).
