Design Miami Basel 2019 Focuses on Sustainability

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The 14th edition of Design Miami Basel opened on June 10, 2019, running through June 16, and is held opposite Art Basel. The theme of sustainability runs through most of the 43 participating galleries and the 13 Curio installations. The Design at Large section, curated by Aric Chen under the title 'Elements: Earth', features large-scale installations. Notable projects include Formafantasma's 'Ore Streams' (presented by Giustini / Stagetti), Erez Nevi Pana's vegan salt stools (Friedman Benda), Shahar Livne's litoplastic (Galerie VIVID), Andrea Branzi's 'Territories' (Friedman Benda), Mameluca's waste-based research (Mercado Moderno), and OrtaMiklos's 'modern technological ruins' (Functional Art Gallery). Another trend is biomorphic and anthropomorphic forms: Zhipeng Tan's '33 Step Chair' (Gallery ALL), jellyfish-inspired chandeliers (Galérie Régis Mathieu), Maria Grazia Rosin's octopus lamp (Caterina Tognon), and Carlo Zauli's monochrome ceramics (Erastudio Apartment-Gallery). The Curio section features 13 installations, including Dimoregallery's tribute to Piero Portaluppi with works by Carlo Scarpa, Gino Sarfatti, Studio Gavina, and Pierre Marie Agin. Rossella Colombari presents rare Carlo Mollino bunk beds (1955). The Swarovski Designers of the Future Award winners are Juju Wang, Studio Klarenbeek and Dros, and Raffe Burrell.
