Design Miami 2016: Emerging Designers and Luxe Stilt House
Design Miami, which started in 2005 with just 12 galleries, now features 31 participants, including newcomers like New York's Chambers, The Future Perfect, and Giovanni Beltran. The fair is accompanied by numerous collateral events across Miami Beach and the Design District. At Volume gallery, emerging artists under 40 showcase works: Christy Matson's natural fiber textiles reminiscent of modernist paintings, Anja Jaworska's lacquered wood 'Set' turning everyday objects into sculptures, and pieces by Jonathan Muecke and Anders Ruhwald. The Future Perfect debuts with Micheal Anastassiades' 'Bespoke Loop' lamps, combining his minimalist style with bold colors, alongside Christopher Stuart's irregular 'domestic-scale sculptures' derived from software glitches and John Hogan's glassworks from Toledo, Ohio. Architect Vincenzo de Cotiis exhibits at a stilt house on Prairie Avenue designed by Rene Gonzales and curated by Chloe Chelz, highlighting rising sea levels. The venue also features works by Germans Ermičs, emerging designer Nina Gonzales, and a site-specific installation by Mauricio Del Valle. De Cotiis' 'Progetto Domestico' series is also shown at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London and Paris.
