award · 2026-04-23

Denilson Baniwa, a 35-year-old artist from the Darí village in Rio Negro, Amazonas, has been announced as the winner of the Prêmio PIPA Online category. The PIPA Prize, one of Brazil's most significant visual arts awards, revealed Baniwa's victory alongside four finalists for its main category: Berna Reale, Cabelo, Guerreiro do Divino Amor, and Jaime Lauriano. Baniwa, described by the prize as an 'anthropophagous artist' who appropriates Western languages to decolonize them in his work, will receive a R$15,000 donation and must donate an artwork to the Instituto PIPA, to be agreed upon with the coordination. The open-participation online category received 24,441 votes distributed among 56 participants. For the main prize category, a council selected the four finalists from 67 participating names. Each finalist is guaranteed a R$30,000 donation and will participate in the Exposição dos Finalistas Prêmio PIPA 2019, held from August 10 to September 28, 2019, at Vila Aymoré in Rio de Janeiro. One of the four will be chosen by a jury as the edition's winner on September 20, receiving an additional R$30,000 for the development of an artistic project.
