Demetrio Stratos' lost score for 'Satyricon ’79' released after 46 years

Demetrio Stratos' final work, the soundtrack for Gabriele Salvatores' theatrical production 'Satyricon ’79', has been restored and released on vinyl by independent label Die Schachtel. The original magnetic tape was recovered from the archives of Milan's Teatro dell’Elfo, where the show premiered in 1979. Stratos, a Greek-born vocalist and multi-instrumentalist known for his experimental work with bands I Ribelli and Area, died in New York in 1979 at age 34. The score features Nay flutes, Balinese instruments, extended vocal techniques, ancient acoustic elements, and pioneering recordings of whale songs. The album was released on October 3, 2025 in multiple editions: a deluxe vinyl limited to 200 copies (including a poster and book), a regular edition of 300 copies, a booklet-only edition of 80 copies with download code, and a digital version. A presentation event will take place on October 13 at Teatro dell’Elfo in Milan, with label founders Bruno Stucchi and Fabio Carboni. The restoration was a collaboration between Teatro dell’Elfo, the Malagola Research Center for Voice and Sound in Ravenna (home of the Demetrio Stratos Archive), and Die Schachtel.
